Menai boat run

Menai boat run

The Menai Boat Run is a multi club event started by East Cheshire a long time ago, before Chester took over the running of it in 2019.

The event is a social get-together (fish and chips ordered prior to the run) for BSAC clubs. It also raises much needed funds for the RNLI with all clubs donating £50 per boat for Beaumaris RNLI, with a total of £1,450 being raised this year.

This year our DO (Alf) arranged for us to attend and take one of the boast out for a run. With a full crew and an early start they headed out to the launching point on a cold and windy day, extra thermals worn.

In total 17 different sub-aqua clubs took part (Chester (x3), Flint, Wirral, Hartford, Bradford, Southport, Shrewsbury, Sandwell, Vale Royal, Octopus 1900, Wapsac, Wrexham Seals, Potteries, Buxton, Trafford, East Cheshire and Rhosneigr) with 130 members and guests on board.

Launch was at 09.45 high water in the direction of Caernarfon turning just before the Castle returning back up the Menai past Felinheli and Plas Newydd under both of the bridges. The next stage was past Beaumaris, on towards Puffin Island turning around just before Penmon lighthouse arriving at Beaumaris for 11.30 where the boats were moored up while Mat’s Neptune fish and chip shop served over 100 portions of fish and chips.

After lunch everyone gathered to hand over a cheque to Tim Bailey, Beaumaris station manager and Steve Barnard, the Helm of the Lifeboat.

The lifeboat crew then launched their boat for a regular exercise and joined BSAC’s boats for the trip back to Felinheli.

I have always loved the sea and diving gives me that little bit of extra special interaction. I love diving anywhere and always find sites interesting and an exhilarating activity, constantly enhancing and improving my skills and knowledge. My favourite diving has to be around the British Isles and in particular St Abbs. It has everything, the sea life, the socialising, the history and the thrill. TSAC has opened up many areas and opportunities for me and hopefully will continue to do so in the future. Here’s to the next adventure.
