Human Diver talk
“Safety is not just the absence of incidents and accidents, but rather the presence of barriers and defences, and the capacity to fail safely”. Todd Conklin
‘Gareth Lock is the Founder and Director of The Human Diver, and best-selling author of Under Pressure. With twelve other Human Diver instructors, he helps divers and teams improve safety and performance by bringing human factors and just culture into daily practice. Through award-winning online and classroom-based learning programmes we transform how people learn from mistakes, and how they lead, follow and communicate while under pressure.
We’ve trained more than 600 people face-to-face and 2500+ online across the globe, and started a movement that encourages curiosity and learning, not judgment and blame.’
This is his introduction on the front page of his website, so for Lisa to have organised for him to give us a complimentary talk was a real coup.

After a last minute venue change and setting up the online link we began by having a pretalk chat and introducing ourselves. There were about 8 people in attendance and as many logging in from home, so a good turn out.
He began with a quick quiz and then quickly fed back linking smoothly into his talk, an introduction to the concepts and ideas behind the human diver. He spoke about how his training is designed to enhance safety, performance, and enjoyment by focusing on human factors. It is about how we think, communicate, and make decisions.
He also spoke about how stronger teams, improve communication, and my ake better decisions, leading to safer, more rewarding dives.
In addition he challenged everyone to improve themselves. After a dive ask what did I do well? How could I improve my diving?

He also explained that Human Factors is about the idea of making easier to do the right thing, and harder to do the wrong thing and to aim for excellence as you don’t know the pass mark.
These key snippets were not just thrown out as sound bites, but were backed up with solid evidence and clear concise explanation.
The end result is we went away inspired to improve how we dive and certainly, for me, to enrol in the course.
Thanks Lisa for organising a really excellent talk.
