Gods Pocket

Gods Pocket

This trip is one of the best out there. Not only for the diving but the pure adventure of getting there and being there.

The best way to explain it is to quote directly from the front page of the dive centres website.
“God’s Pocket is an off-grid dive lodge nestled in British Columbia’s unique temperate rainforest in a protected bay on Hurst Island, northeast off the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. Located 10 nautical miles from the nearest town of Port Hardy, God’s Pocket is only accessible by sea or air and is the only standing man-made structure on the Island. The lodge is fully immersed in raw, unfiltered Canadian coastal nature”.

This journey to Gods Pocket takes time and as such only a few from our club have visited, but many would like to go. It seems that once bitten the lure is strong with many members being repeat returners.

This year those on the adventure added to the diving by going early and hiking through the wilds of British Columbia to make the most of the stunning scenery. They visited sites such as the Athabaska falls out of Jasper, Valley of the Five Lakes, Mount Robson and the Overlander Falls.

Eventually all the divers met up and the Gods Pocket diving begun.

The superb diving around God’s Pocket was complemented by bonus above-water sightings of humpbacks, sea otters, orca, sea lions, porpoises, bald eagle, a wolf and of course not forgetting the scenery.

Underwater the scenery was just as spectacular with good visibility and an amazing array of marine life. In actual fact the only description is that it was literally bursting with life. Bright coloured anemones, huge schools of fish are all part of this unique ecosystem. It is caused by deep Ocean currents upwelling and mixing with nutrient rich surface waters so supports dazzling reefs and a large bio diverse environment.

Evenings are spent relaxing in the cabins and watching the sun go down over the British Columbian skyline.

This is definitely a MUST return dive week and I know the club will go again, with, of course, additional adventures tacked on.

I have always loved the sea and diving gives me that little bit of extra special interaction. I love diving anywhere and always find sites interesting and an exhilarating activity, constantly enhancing and improving my skills and knowledge. My favourite diving has to be around the British Isles and in particular St Abbs. It has everything, the sea life, the socialising, the history and the thrill. TSAC has opened up many areas and opportunities for me and hopefully will continue to do so in the future. Here’s to the next adventure.
