Tenerife diving

Tenerife diving

Continuing our recent theme of club members diving the Canary Islands over the last few years, the next stop was Tenerife (Lanzarote and Fuerteventura having been visited).

The previous islands have all proved to be great dive spots and have provided extremely enjoyable trips with plenty to see below and above the water.

This time the diving was out of Porto Colon with TravelSub dive centre. Set in a busy area the club has a great deal of through flow but boasts three ribs and a large, competent team. They also provide all kit if needed and an area to relax in before and after the dives.

Each dives follows the same routine. getting into the kit and the a briefing in the centre followed by a short walk down to the harbour onto one of the three ribs. Once on the rib kit is attached to the cylinders and then we head out to the dive site. upon return kit is either left on the boat, if completing a second dive, or returned to the centre, where it can be washed.

There are several dive sites dotted along the coast ranging from wall dives, to reef dives, to wrecks. All have similar life but this is plentiful and, since the visibility is good, easily spotted. Rays of all sizes and types are frequent visitors and will often glide past oblivious of the divers around them. Turtles frequent the reefs and often swim past wanting to see what’s happening. There are large schools of fish, my particular favourite being the barracuda. The highlight, however, has to be the Angel sharks. these enigmatic sharks bury themselves in the sand and are easily missed, but siting’s reached double figure before the end of the trip and to see them free swimming was amazing.

The visibility mainly held up with 15 – 20 meters being a regular occurrence. there is a little bit of tidal movement and currents can be reasonably strong but nothing that cant be solved with a comfortable drift.

Overall yet another great dive in the Canaries and one to return to in the future.

I have always loved the sea and diving gives me that little bit of extra special interaction. I love diving anywhere and always find sites interesting and an exhilarating activity, constantly enhancing and improving my skills and knowledge. My favourite diving has to be around the British Isles and in particular St Abbs. It has everything, the sea life, the socialising, the history and the thrill. TSAC has opened up many areas and opportunities for me and hopefully will continue to do so in the future. Here’s to the next adventure.
