Treyarnon Bay snorkelling
Having gone away for a weeks holiday in Cornwall with the family I promised not to take diving kit. However we took wetsuits, and I honestly have no idea how, but a snorkel, mask and fins had added themselves to the equipment!
It started off with a strong wind which allowed the surfers to fill the bay, not really of interest, but as the week progressed the weather got better and the seas calmed and the opportunity to snorkel arrived.
Sadly I was only able to snorkel one side of the bay as Doc Martin was filming on the other an had closed the area off, health and safety. I was thinking of asking Martin Clunes to join me but never got the chance!
I decided to snorkel along the rocks from the beech and through a long gulley dividing the mainland from a small island.
The rocks were covered in mussels, sadly just not quite big enough to justify harvesting. The visibility improved from about 6 meters to 8 as I moved away from the beech. Once I entered the gulley the depth dropped to about 5 meters and life became more prolific as I moved along the gulley towards the end open to the sea rather than the bay. The depth dropped to about 8 meters by the end, although this drops down to about 4 meters at low tide.
The down side, it wasn’t a dive but it was still 90 minutes of explortion and fun.
This would make a good shallow dive from the beech but did make for an interesting snorkel.
