Some of you will know that I cancelled a proposed trip to Canada due this September, because of worries about the operator’s business. However, the area north of Port Hardy on Vancouver Island has world class scenic diving (we’ve been twice before) and really needs repeating. I’ve already got 11 of those who were on the cancelled 2017 trip signed up for the next one, but there are potentially 2 spaces left (if we don’t take them the operator will sell them elsewhere). You will need to be at least an experienced Sports Diver or above by the time of the trip 2½ years from now. God’s Pocket has an excellent reputation. See below for details and let me know asap if you want to come. It’s fabulous diving.
• 31 Aug 2019 pickup in Port Hardy
• 6 full days diving for 12 people, exclusive use of boat and accommodation
• 7 Sep 2019 dropoff in Port Hardy
• $3304.11 per person Canadian $ all taxes included (£2009 at today’s exchange rate. If you know what the exchange rate will be in 2019 please consider paying for a trip for all of us)
• 25% non-refundable deposit (roughly £500 at the moment)
God’s Pocket is only a few miles from Hideaway (where we’ve been before), so it is the same diving. The place looks good on their web site and has good reviews (but it does mean that it attracts the sort of people who write effusive reviews on Trip Advisor). They appear to be business-like, and they have responded within hours to each of the emails I’ve sent. You can pay by card.
Flights MAN-YVR for the equivalent week in 2017 are about £500. Car hire, hotels, ferries maybe another £250. So probably a bit less than £3K at today’s prices. Paying £500 up front so far ahead is a pain but non-negotiable I think: they’re fully booked 2017 and 2018, and say they’re 40% booked in 2019 and 2020, and their only local competitor seems to be in trouble. The final price is fixed once the deposit is paid. In any case God’s Pocket is clearly a reputable outfit and customers’ bookings will be properly documented and therefore insurable (though personally I wouldn’t pay 2 year’s premiums for a USA & Canada uplift on our annual travel insurance just to cover the probability of needing to cancel early and losing £500).
It is fantastic diving and I would like to go again. It’s clear you have to book well ahead at this place. Even individuals and couples are looking at 2019 for a place now. So we would need to book soon. It would be nice to take the whole place (12, or 13 maximum), but I would organise for a smaller group if necessary.
Please respond quickly if you want to join us.
